This is my newest horse. Yes, lately I’ve gone through a few of them. Some people fix up cars or houses and sell them. I buy fixer-upper horses, rehab them, then find them great homes. The latest model is an off-the-track Thoroughbred, “Soviet Party” or “Roamin’” for short. I traded him for web design.
The first thing I noticed when I went to look at a “Quarter Horse gelding” was his lip tattoo. For those of you that aren’t horse savvy, that means he is a Thoroughbred, NOT a Quarter Horse. That didn’t matter to me, so I hopped on and took him for a little spin and was blown away by how balanced, free and light he was! I can’t remember the last time I rode such a sound horse. He was in pretty rough shape, but he was a sweet boy, so I decided to take a gamble on him.
This is Roamin’ the day he arrived. He seemed lethargic to me from day one, but not knowing him, it was hard to say. The next thing I noticed was that he would only pick at his food. Stress or sick?? Sick, of course. Poor guy had a horrible case of Strangles. He went completely off feed and became dehydrated. He needed extreme antibiotics and pain management. If I hadn’t gotten him out of where he was, I’m convinced he would have died.
This is Roamin’ yesterday, after six weeks of rehabilitation. He has turned out to be an incredible animal!
